Lebreton Flats: Past, present & future

Phil has led this walk before with Jane's Walk.  Intentions for Lebreton Flats have continued to evolve (if that's the right word).  RendezVous Lebreton, the grand scheme for LeBreton Flats adopted in 2016, included plans for an NHL-class hockey arena, about 4000 residential units, a recreational facility parkland, and a new cental library.  That scheme has imploded, leaving the NCC to restart the planning process.  The walk will include discussion of the next decade in the rollercoaster history of the Flats, where Ottawa first started.

Please bring your stories, questions, and opinions along to share.

Location
Route

We'll meet on the plaza at the entrance to the War Museum.  From there, we'll pass by the Holocaust Memorial (NE corner of Eddy St and the Parkway), cross the Parkway, pass the FireFighters' Memorial, and go south on Lett St. along the front of the condo row. The route will take us to the Booth Street Bridge, west on the south side of Parkway, across to the War Museum, along the back of the Museum past the Chaudière Falls, and back to our starting point.

Please review our covid guidelines before attending a walk.
About the walk leader

Phil Jenkins is a singer-songwriter, journalist, and the author of several books about the history of Ottawa.  Today's walk is based on his book, An Acre of Time, which is simultaneously about a single acre of land in Lebreton Flats and about Canada's and even mankind's attitude toward land, its use and control.  A new edition of An Acre of Time was published in 2020.  Phil describes himself as a "landscape artist, but I write word pictures on the page, not paint on canvas."
