Explore Historic Aylmer with Lynne Rodier

In the footsteps of the builders: a walk through the old Village of Aylmer

Note:  This walk will be given in French

This free walking tour will be punctuated with stories and anecdotes to reveal the past traces left by the people who built the old Village of Aylmer.  The old Village of Aylmer was one of the first places in the Outaouais to be settled.  The Old Village district of Aylmer retains links with its past through its imposing public buildings and splendid residences, a dozen of which are over 140 years old.  Walking along Rue Principale in Aylmer demonstrates how this dynamic area has evolved into an integrated blend of heritage homes, more modern residences, businesses, and public and cultural services that respect not only the history of the community but also the needs of today's families.

The walk begins at the Symmes Inn Museum and follows the main street where Aylmer was born. In the 19th century, Aylmer distinguished itself by playing an important role as administrative and judicial center for the region, as well as being a launching point for river transport.  It was recognized for its luxurious hotels, sumptuous residences, public services, and commercial enterprises.
