Kilborn Allotment Gardens

Cette promenade a également lieu en français.

The tour of the Kilborn Allotment Gardens will visit four or five active plots, hosted by the individual gardeners. Topics will include irrigation, seed selection, pest control, weed management, and the wider issues of community food security and regional biodiversity.

Location
Route

We'll meet near the sheds in the parking lot of the Kilborn Allotment Gardens on the south side of Pleasant Park Road west of Haig Dr. (near Dorval Ave & Pleasant Park Rd). From there, we'll take a circular route around the plots along the footpaths betweem the allotments.

The terrain is uneven and likely to be muddy at the beginning of May. Waterproof footwear is recommended. Conditions typically prevent use of strollers or mobility aids along the paths between the gardens. The recreational path along the west side is paved.

Visitors may park in the area at the entrance to the gardens.

The allotments can be reached by bus routes 48 and 49.

The north-south recreational pathway that runs from Conroy & Walkley through to the Ottawa Hospital General Campus passes the west side of the allotments between Kilborn and Pleasant Park.

About the walk leader

Janet Mark Wallace has been a community garden advocate for twenty-five years. Since moving to Ottawa in 1998, she has helped establish community gardens at schools, churches, and co-op housing. She has held an allotment in the Kilborn Allotment Gardens since 2011. In 2022, she founded the Jardiniers Kilborn Gardeners to facilitate collaboration among gardeners at the Kilborn Allotments, with regard to sharing of equipment, saving seeds, waste management, and gardener education. The annual Jane's Walk at the allotments brings gardeners from across Ottawa and allows us to connect and network with similar groups in other parts of the city.
