Designing our Cities for Health & Well-being: Creating Cities for All

A walk for all ages!  If everything we do in our cities is great for an 8-year-old and an 80-year-old, then it will be great for all people.

This short walk will discuss and demonstrate how we can modify established suburban environments to make them safer, healthier, and more engaging through small, but significant people-centred design.  Join Alice Hutton in a walk through her home neighbourhood as she identifies the challenges and successes in making our neighbourhoods healthy.

Stops include pedestrian signals, street murals, urban intensification, and a community garden.   Alice will highlight the leadership, creativity, and innovation of Woodpark residents as well as highlight the ideas behind 8-80 Cities.

There is a video on-line documenting the Woodpark Street Mural Project, which created the mural at Ancaster and Flower Aves.

Location
Route

Meet at in front of Entrance 3 (north-west side) of Carlingwood Shopping Centre (Woodroffe, north of Carling).  The walk will proceed to Saville and Woodroffe, then south on Woodroffe to Carling, west on Carling to Ancaster Ave, north on Ancaster to Lawn, west on Lawn to the Woodpark Community Garden and then along the NCC Lincoln Fields path to Edgeworth and Carling, where the walk ends.

Participants can make their own way back to Carlingwood Mall or west to the Lincoln Fields Transitway.

The walk will follow paved paths and sometimes narrow sidewalks.  Accessibility will be one of the topics of the walk and the narrow or otherwise less-than-ideal accessibility aspects will be pointed out along the way.
