National Artillery Monument, Green Island

Green Island is a beautiful oasis familiar to many, but you may not now about the eight memorials tucked between the embassies and stately homes. Some of these memorials honour famous Canadians like John McCrae. Others are curious memorials to events you may never have heard of. And some are even a little menacing, such as the plaque to Chemical Warfare Volunteers.

This walk will explore the people and events memorialized by these monuments, and will discuss the art and the artists who have created them.

We will talk about the things we choose to remember, and how our memories change as time passes.

Veterans and the families of veterans are invited to bring stories of their experiences to share.

Route

We'll meet at the National Artillery Monument on Green Island. From there, we'll go generally south along Sussex Drive, and end at the Chateau Laurier.

About the walk leader

Larry Capstick and Rob Collins are Volunteer Interpreters at the Canadian War Museum. Together, they have developed a comprehensive tour of military memorials in the downtown Ottawa area.
