Ottawa’s Historic Financial District

Starting with the Bank of Montreal's arrival in 1842, the creation of Banker's Row opposite Parliament, the move of most banks to Sparks St., and the creation of the Bank of Canada, the history and architecture of Ottawa's Historic Financial District is a fascinating story. Many interesting and elegant buildings survive, though most have new uses.

Along the Sparks St. Mall from Elgin to Metcalfe; short detour up Metcalfe St.; back to Sparks and west to O'Connor St.; north to Wellington St.; west to the Bank of Canada.

About the walk leader

David Jeanes is president of Heritage Ottawa and has led many different walking tours for Heritage Ottawa, Jane's Walk, and other organizations. He has a keen interest in the built heritage of Ottawa, dating from his high-school days at Lisgar Collegiate.
