Britannia Village: Eclectic Architecture and Fascinating History

Although Britannia Village was first established as a sawmill town in 1818, its rapid development in early 1900 was largely driven by the Britannia Amusement Park. The Park became one of Canada’s top tourist attractions, owing largely to the magnificent “electrified” Britannia Pier.

Paradoxically, a failed hydroelectric project in the village resulted in both the establishment of the Britannia Pier and the creation of new harbours that allowed the membership of the Britannia Yacht Club to increase by 600%.

Join us as we view fourteen designated heritage properties while we recount stories of Britannia Village from the past with supporting storyboards and printed material.

We'll meet at the intersection of Rowatt St. and Kirby Rd. From there, we'll walk east on Rowatt to Bradford St., north along Bradford to the Britannia Yacht Club. Continuing east on Cassels St., we'll come to Britannia Rd., then turn south, walking three blocks to Salina St. in the south end of the village. Turning west on Salina, we come back to Bradford Rd., where we will go north to Rowatt and then west, returning to the intersection of Rowatt and Kirby, where we began. The distance is about 1.5 km.

For those using strollers, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters, the streets in Britannia are narrow; except for Britannia Rd. there are no sidewalks, so we will be walking on the road. The sidewalks have curb cuts that may be a little tricky for wheeled vehicles. On the plus side, the area is generally flat.

There is parking along Rowatt St. and Kirby Rd.
