The History of the Golden Triangle — What Is and What was

The Golden Triangle is now one of the best preserved and protected heritage neighbourhoods in Ottawa. Until around 1900, it was a combination of swamp, shanties, and snowdrifts. At the turn of the 19th to the 20th centuries, it became Ottawa's first planned subdvivision. Both elegant and modest homes were built. Schools and hospitals met the needs of growing families. The war effort for the Second World War drastically changed the northern quarter. A general decline followed, but was later reversed through restoration and beautification as the neighbourhood became more desirable again.

On this tour, we'll both imagine what the Golden Triangle was and see what it has become. We'll hear of famous Ottawans and average people, all in the space of a little over a kilometre.

We'll meet in front of the Cartier Drill Hall, just east of Marion Dewar Plaza at Ottawa City Hall. From there, we will zig-zag our way through the side streets between Elgin and the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, moving generally south, ending at the corner of Elgin St and Park Ave, just opposite the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Au sujet du guide

Hello there! I'm Rob Collins, from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where I've lived for more than four decades. Following a fulfilling career in the high-tech sector, I decided to embark on a new adventure and returned to school to study history. In 2008, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree. My passion and my goal now is to make history accessible and engaging to the broader public.

Popular history, as I see it, should be lively, thought-provoking, and, above all, fun. It's about storytelling. I do this through Jane's Walk walking tours, private guided tours, and web sites, and as a volunteer interpreter at the Canadian War Museum. Topics so far include the founding of Ontario by refugees from the American Revolution, and raising awareness of Ottawa's military monuments (developed with Larry Capstick, a fellow War Museum Volunteer Interpreter).
