The Streetcar & the Circus Tent. 100 Years of Wellington Village.

May 2019 marks the 100th Anniversary of a very important event in the life of this bustling West end neighbourhood. What happened on that date? What was here before? How has the neighbourhood and the traditional mainstreet district along Wellington West changed over that time? And what's all this about a circus tent?

You'll have to join this walk to find out! You'll hear stories, meet some local characters, and get a chance to see some photographs, maps, and artifacts that show how much the area has changed.

As a bonus, the walk will deliver you to the CUBE Gallery, where you can join the Jane's Walk crew for a party to celebrate Jane Jacob's 103rd birthday

We'll meet in front of the Thyme & Again shop at Wellington West and Huron Ave North.  From there, we go east a block to Holland, then west towards Island Park Drive and then head back to end at CUBE Gallery (opposite Julian Ave.).

Au sujet du guide

Dennis Van Staalduinen is a local storyteller, dad, community activist, and (incidentally) Executive Director of the Wellington West Business Improvement Area. He loves discovering the hidden connections between cities, stories, and history, and over the years has developed more than a dozen compelling and entertaining new walks for Jane's Walk Ottawa-Gatineau.

Popular walks of previous years have included Sir John A. Macdonald Gets an Eyefull; Necropolis Now! Monuments to dead people; Ghosts of Wellington Street; Plans of the Crown, Ghosts of the Town; Alternate Histories of Ottawa, and more.

Dave Allston is a sixth generation resident of Ottawa's west end, with a life-long interest in local history.  He is the go-to guy for Kitchessippi area local history.  Not surprisingly, Dave is the curator of the Kitchissippi Museum, a blog about west Ottawa's little-known history, with stories, photos, and information covering the fascinating history of the historic Kitchissippi neighbourhoods.
