Jane Scharf has been leading this informative walk since Ottawa's first Jane's Walk was held in 2008. Jane will introduce and discuss several institutions and locations that are significant to homeless people in Ottawa. Along the way, we will hear from those who are or were homeless to gain some perspective on their experiences.
The Byward Market area is important to homeless people because two major organizations that care for them are located here. The walk will begin at The Shepherds of Good Hope. We will also pass by the Salvation Army, The Bridge, and several other places that are important to the care and experience of Homeless People in our city.
Meet at Murray & King Edward, in front of the Shepherds of Good Hope shelter. From there, we will walk over to Dalhousie St., then south to George Street. From there we will continue south to Rideau, then turn west on Rideau St. We'll end at the pedestrian underpass at the Terry Fox Bridge, which is also significant to Ottawa's homeless people.
Jane Scharf is a long time advocate for poor and homeless people, and led a number of successful protests regarding the treatment of homeless people. She once lived on the streets of Ottawa as a teenager.
