Maplewood: Then and Now

Come enjoy a walk in the woods right in the city!

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the re-zoning of the Montfort Woods as Environmentally Sensitive.

The walk will give some context to the controversies that led to that decision as well as taking us back to pre-1950s when the area was still called Maplewood.  It has been a focal point of community activism and civic mindedness for many decades. As we walk, we will remember some of those events and outstanding persons who lived, worked, and worship in what used to be called Maplewood.

If you have stories to tell about the woods, or news & views about the future of the area, please come and share them.

We'll meet at the Monument de la Francophonie, in front of Montfort Hospital on Montreal Rd, under the big green and white flag.

From the Monument de la Francophonie , we will walk to the historic stone house at the corner of Montreal Rd. and the Aviation Parkway.   From there we proceed to the woods, just north of the hospital. Depending on the size of the group, we may take Lang’s Rd. or walk along the Aviation Parkway. A circular path through the woods awaits us, exiting at Lang’s Rd. We will continue east through the Fairhaven Community to East Gate Alliance Church on Codd’s Rd. where the walk ends.

Au sujet du guide

Anne Prowse has lived within a mile of the Montfort Woods for more than 20 years. She continues to be fascinated by how the present is rooted in the past. The walk she led last year in Overbrook was included in the first annual Jane’s Walk book  (2013).
