Engineer's Stories About Ottawa's Built Heritage

This walk was conceived as a tribute to the late Hourieh Mashayekh, an Iranian/Canadian architect and urban planner, who was actively involved in her adopted city's heritage community.

Participants will explore some of Ottawa's oldest heritage landmarks such as the Rideau Canal (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Sappers, Dufferin, and Alexandra bridges, and more contemporary cultural institutions such as the National Arts Centre and the Museum of Civilization.

Trajet

Starting from the NAC entrance (canal side), we'll walk generally north from the NAC, crossing the canal at Wellington St, through Major's Hill Park, past Nepean Point and out onto the Alexandra Bridge, where we will be able to view the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Au sujet du guide

Abdol Nouraeyan is Bridge Engineer who came to Ottawa in 1988. He joined the City of Ottawa design and construction branch in 1993. Abdol has worked on design and construction of many significant projects in the City of Ottawa. He is on sabbatical until Jan 2014.

Hagit Hadaya holds degrees in Canadian Heritage Conservation and Architectural History from Carleton University. She has conducted various walking tours for Heritage Ottawa and various other organizations and groups since the late 1980s.

Mehdi Nasrin has a Ph.D. in philosophy. A teacher for the past ten years, Mehdi has prepared orientation programs for new immigrants and designed courses on sustainability, hot environmental topics, and innovative green businesses. He hosts a weekly program on an independent Persian Radio station, and writes a personal blog; he tries to raise awareness about environmental issues in his community.
