The route follows city sidewalks and paved paths. There are stairs at the pedestrian access between Echo Dr. and Col. By Drive.
This walk will focus on landmarks and the development of the area bordering the Rideau Canal between Old Ottawa South and the Glebe. Landmarks of interest include Colonel By Residence (the former Perley Hospital), Southminster United Church, the Sunnyside Library, the recently renovated College of Physicians and Surgeons building, Lansdowne Park (visible across the canal), the Bank St Bridge (also recently restored), and the high point of land near Bank and the canal known as the "mountain."
From the starting point, we'll walk down to Bank St, cross near the library, and continue down Echo Drive to the point where Echo converges with Riverdale. At the nearby pedestrian access to Colonel. By Drive, we'll cross Col By and follow the bike path back under Bank St and on to Rosedale Ave.
John Leaning is formerly the Chief Architect of the NCC. He is the author of a number of books on the history of The Glebe and Old Ottawa South. John has been leading walks for Jane's Walk Ottawa since the first event in 2008. Although he has now moved to Alymer Ave, we will continue the tradition of beginning the walk on his front porch.
